Gallups at the Battle of Stonington 1814

Recently we did some research to could find if any Gallup ancestors were involved with the Battle of Stonington. We found that Amos Gallup (GG 503) was a Selectman at that time. There is at John D. Gallup, Corporal, listed in the Fourth Company of the Third Brigade of the Eastern Division of the CT Militia for the War of 1812. Jabez D. Gallup (GG 1093), was also listed in the Fifth Company of the same Regiment.

Amos’s son, John Dean (or Deane) Gallup (GG 1092) was with the gun crew at the Point along with Frederick Denison and (John) Stanton Gallup (GG 1362). John Dean Gallup is called out in the Battle of Stonington as the person who nailed the flag up when the villagers retreated because gunpowder had run out!

I believe that this is the same flag that Historic Stonington has preserved. This same battle flag (with 16 stars and 16 stripes) was never authorized by Congress! Apparently it was created between 1796 (when TN entered Union as sixteenth state) and 1808 (when Ohio entered the Union).
